Grants & Loans

Help finding, applying for and administering state and federal funding for Kansas communities.

Overview

Funding your project from application to closeout

Grant and loan programs can make an essential project affordable, but each one has its own eligibility rules, deadlines and paperwork. Ranson has certified personnel with more than 30 years of experience helping Kansas communities apply for and administer Kansas Small Cities Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) awards.

We also work with other agency programs, including USDA Rural Development, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) revolving loan funds and the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), and we can help you combine grants, loans and local financing into one plan.

Why an independent advisor

We work only for you

Our job is to help your community, not to sell a loan or a bond. When a project needs local financing alongside a grant, we can compare the options, including bonds and temporary notes, and we work only for you.

Because Ranson Financial Group has no relationship with any underwriting firm, our advice on how to fund a project is not tied to who might buy your debt.

  • We represent the city or county, never a lender or underwriter
  • Grants, loans and local financing in one plan
  • Clear explanations for councils and commissions

FAQ

Common questions

Under federal rules, a CDBG project must meet at least one national objective: benefit low- and moderate-income people, remove or prevent slum or blight, or meet an urgent need created by a disaster when local funds are not available. Each Kansas category has its own limits and scoring.

USDA’s Water and Environmental Programs serve rural areas and cities and towns of 10,000 people or less. Public bodies, nonprofits and recognized tribes may qualify.

KDHE administers two revolving loan funds, one for public water supply and one for wastewater. They lend to Kansas municipalities at below-market interest rates for eligible infrastructure.

Often, yes. Many projects pair a grant with an SRF or USDA loan, or with local bonds or temporary notes. We help you see how the pieces fit and what each requires.

No. Program maximums, scoring and deadlines change, so we confirm current guidelines with the agency before each application.
